The News of Biking for health Study Finds Cycling Might Reduce Breast Cancer Risk FEBRUARY 11, 2003 -- BALTIMORE, MD (BRAIN)--Researchers at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg found that increasing cycling levels might reduce a women's risk of getting breast cancer by a third. The study was in the American Journal of Epidemiology.According to the study, as few as three hours of moderately intensive cycling per week can cut the chances of getting the cancer. The researchers found that the benefits increased the more cycling the women did.Other studies also have shown that all forms of exercise can reduce the risk of getting cancer. This is the first study that specifically looked at cycling. The researchers admitted that the women studied may have had a better recall of their cycling activity than other forms of exercise.About 400 pre-menopausal women under the age of 45 who had already had breast cancer and 880 healthy women were surveyed. Researchers asked them about the kind of exercise they engaged in between the ages of 12 and 19 and 20 and 30, and whether it was light, moderate or heavy. The researchers said future studies should look at national differences in exercise habits. They pointed out that cycling is a common form of transportation in Germany as well as a recreational activity, unlike other countries such as the United States.
