Plenty of shopping to be had in Beijing now.  Mostly souvenirs, followed by rip-off designer ware, pirate dvds, fake Chinese antiques etc.  Reasonably priced electronics.  However, lack of standards require you to be very careful about what you buy.  The return policy is non-existent in 98% of stores so they make you try your purchase out extensively before you leave the store.  Credit cards are accepted in about 10% of stores but this situation is getting better as 2008 (Olympics year) approaches.

Main Shopping Areas

Wangfujing Street

Lots of different stores here including many selling souvenirs.  Prices not too bad, but some things can be found cheaper elsewhere. Full details ...

Xidan Area

Many large department stores selling good brand fixed price goods including electronic equipment like dvd players. Credit cards widely accepted for electronics and expensive items. Other malls selling cheap clothing with bargaining.

Xiu Shui Jie Shopping Mall / Xiu Shui Market

Market-style shopping mall for tourists selling all kinds of clothing, bags, replica  designer labels etc.  All prices are negotiable so bargaining skills are essential.

Hong Qiao Market

In the south central area of Beijing, this indoor market is popular with foreign students.  It is a good source of extremely cheap no-name or fake brand electronics, sunglasses, batteries, watches etc.  Bargaining also required.
Zhong Guan Cun Area

Up in the north west corner of Beijing. Specializing in computer goods but split into many small stores most not speaking a word of English.  Go here just for amusement or if you want to buy an extremely cheap modem or pirate computer software.  Take an interpreter/guide.  Full details coming soon .....
Panjiayuan Jiu Huo Shichang

Market selling Chinese antiques located in the south east of Beijing.  Lots of stuff here but 98% is a reproduced antique so only buy if you like the "look" of it, not for any "supposed" antique value. Bargaining essential.  Full details coming soon .....

Beijing Shopping
The opening up of Beijing to the west has had a profound impact on shopping. A wide range of consumer goods (both local and imported) are now available and shopping malls, luxury brand outlets and car dealerships are mushrooming across the city. The new Jinyuan shopping mall is the city's largest, while Oriental Plaza (underneath Grand Hyatt) also has a popular food court and supermarket. The China World Center caters to those with upscale brand obsessions and large wallets. The main shopping area is pedestrianized Wangfujing Dajie, crammed with foreign brand outlets and department stores.

The best clothes shops are on Dong Dan Bei Dajie, as well as Silk Alley , Xiushui Dong Jie off Jianguomenwai Dajie, which also has silk stalls. Here, prices are displayed but it is worth bargaining. Just along the road is the famous Friendship Store , which has several floors of tourist souvenirs, laquerware, jewelry and Chinese tea.

Collectors of antiques should make for Liulichang , a few minutes' walk south of Heping Men subway station. This market is crammed with ancient-style shops, reconstructed in a traditional way and stocking a bewildering array of antiques and curios. Note that antiques over 100 years old are marked with a red wax seal and an export license must be issued in order to take them out of the country. The weekend market at Panjiayuan Jiuhuo Shichang is an enormous, open-air place with great bargains on items such as jade, wood panelling, pottery and bric-a-brac.

Most shops are open daily 0900-2200.
