TRIP DESCRIPTION:
Explore the charming alleyways and thoroughfares, landmarks, parks, and temples of Old Beijing. Pedal through this historic area on one of the best ways to get around in the city—a bicycle.
Begin your full-day tour at Ditan Gonuan (Temple of the Earth Park). Hhundreds of years ago emperors made sacrifices here to appease earth gods. Journey on to Lama Temple: this former royal palace is now one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world.
Now a favorite park for strolling and lovers' rendezvous,
Next, come upon Kong Miao (Temple of Confucius)—the second largest temple constructed for Confucius—and neighboring Guozijian (Imperial Academy), formerly the highest institute of learning in China's traditional educational system. Pass through commercial roads, thoroughfares, and alleys on the way to the Drum and Bell Towers. These tall, ancient structures, along with the instruments they housed, once served as the official timepieces for the people of Beijing.
Pedal by the small shops, cozy restaurants, and traditional courtyard houses for which Old Beijing is known before stopping for a refreshing cup of tea or coffee at one of the many bars or cafes on the scenic banks of Houai Lake. Follow your nose along the west bank, make a left, and arrive at Gongwanfu (Pring Gong's Palace), where a delicious lunch (included) with locals awaits you.
