Jingshanling & Simatai Great Wall

Located 2.5 hour drive north east of Beijing in Gubeikou Town. This section of the Great Wall is regarded by many as the most beautiful and memorable, due to its well preserved state and Ming Dynasty features. The steps are sectioned by a watch tower, each unique and dominant, and provides a place to rest before continuing onto the next. The scenery is magnificent, overlooking a reservoir and neighbouring mountain ridges, where the wall spines its way into the distance.

Jingshanling & Simatai Great Wall. which is well-known for its five characters of “steepness, compactness, queerness, wonderfulness, and comprehensiveness”, is located inGubeikou Town to the north-east of Miyun, Beijing. Jingshanling & Simatai Great Wall is exquisite in its details and is grand as a whole, which is the only part of ancient Great Walls with the original features of Ming Dynasty well reserved.

CHENGDE, a small country town 250km northeast of Beijing, is surrounded by the Yunshan mountain range. On its outskirts are remnants from its glory days as the summer retreat of the Manchu emperors. In recent years it has once more become a summer haven, filling up at weekends with Beijingers escaping the hassles of the capital.

Guest Reviews:

"First, this review is of Bike Beijings longer trips, we did not tour Beijing. But if you are looking for a more in-depth review on a multi day trip this will be a must read.

Rider info: I am a fair-weather road and mountain bike rider, 1,500-2,000 miles a season. I have a group of riding buddies and one of them moved to China, so my buddy and I flew to Beijing and caught up with our friend living there and took this trip. We are intermediate to advanced, in the world of novice bike riders. We aren't setting any records but we like to ride hard. This trip was a great mix of riding and sight seeing, and we were able to ride as much as we wanted. George was our guide, and I cannot say enough about him. He was very accommodating, great conversation, and all the details were handled from great food, to lodging, to riding, etc... I will try to give an accurate account of the trip from a biking and sightseeing experience.
4 days- day 1 60KM day 2 90KM day 3 90KM day 4 25 KM
Day 1 - we start by getting picked up early at 6am at the train station. We get our bike and gear at George's bike shop and get out of town. Once out of town we get on our bikes and ride a nice road to a section of the Great Wall. We eat a great lunch, then hike the wall for about an hour and a half. Then ride the rest of the afternoon. Very nice roads, traffic is not heavy and drivers are all courteous to bikers. Hotel first night as a sauna and spa room with hot tub, a must after riding and we enjoyed it. Hotel was western style with great buffet breakfast.
Day 2- Great ride, longer and good roads. 10 miles of a busy road with lots of semi trucks. This was the only stretch of dicey road we were on, but the rest of the day was tree lined roads in the country that almost felt like Italy. Sounds weird, but that is what I thought of. We were in Early spring, March 24-28 so the roads were dirty from winter, but if that wasn't the case I would have wanted to be on my road bike.
Ride ends with riding up 4-5KM uphill to the lodge that is right by the great wall, it was brutal but made the day end in style. Another great dinner.
Day 3- We woke up at 5am to see the sun rise on the wall. Brought the bike up for photo op and got some good photos. Hiked the wall until 8am. Amazing. Then we rode uphill over a pass for at least an hour and half, but the grade was not unbearable but it was knackering. The rest of the day was a pleasant downhill into Chengde.
We stayed at another western style hotel, but they had a spa attached and we had chinese massages, they were off the chart good. Highly recommend it.
Day 4- We did more sightseeing on day four in the Chengde area and went to some temples which were interesting. Then we went and drove a ways back toward Beijing, rode 25 KM around a very old traditional village that would be near impossible to find without George as your guide and then ended at this hotel that seemed right out of the movie "the Shining". But it was a very nice day to end on and then we had a two hr drive back into Beijing.

Highlights: Newer bikes (mine was brand new). No Mechanical issues. Roads- they were mostly all new, didn't see but a couple of pot holes, better than in Michigan! George- having a guide to talk with about China was great and he was very knowledgable about many topics. Having a sag-wagon so you can set your own schedule. All inclusive is the way to go, I thought there was great value for what you get with George's picks of food, hotel, van, etc... The Great Wall, it is a must and quite amazing. Riding around China on bikes with your buddies and trying to find a donkey to ride. You can't beat that kind of fun anywhere. We were unsuccessful, we encountered very grumpy donkeys that wanted to kick bite or scratch you to death so it didn't pan out. But we will be back...

All in all, if you are looking for a great experience, I would recommend talking to George. Check out the attached photos. " Nick,Grand Rapids, Michigan
